Morocco Leads Global Efforts Against Hunger: Chairing the United Nations World Food Programme's Executive Board
Morocco has made history by assuming the leadership of the United Nations World Food Programme's (WFP) Executive Board for the first time in 2024, a significant milestone for the North African nation.
Youssef Balla, Morocco's permanent ambassador to UN agencies in Rome, represented the country during the Board's inaugural session of the year at WFP headquarters, where Morocco secured a unanimous election.
This appointment underscores Morocco's steadfast dedication to global humanitarian initiatives. As chair, Morocco will play a central role in shaping international policies addressing hunger and food insecurity.
The 36-member Executive Board is responsible for overseeing WFP operations and resources. Morocco's election is indicative of the increasing confidence in its leadership, particularly in ensuring regional and global food security, with a focus on Africa.
Morocco's assumption of the presidency comes at a pivotal time. Humanitarian crises are escalating globally, exacerbated by factors such as climate change. Additionally, WFP is undergoing reforms aimed at enhancing its capacity to fund and deliver emergency aid efficiently.
As a developing nation with a history of addressing hunger issues, Morocco is well-equipped to advocate for the world's most vulnerable populations. Since joining the Board in late 2020, Morocco has demonstrated its ability to represent African members effectively.
In 2024, under Morocco's guidance, the international community aims to bolster WFP's efforts to save lives during crises and implement sustainable development programs in countries affected by climate change and related disasters. Through adept diplomacy, Morocco has the potential to significantly enhance the agency's impact in eradicating global hunger.
