US-Morocco Forum Unlocks Venture Capitalist Doors for Thriving Startups

Marrakech, Morocco – The United States Mission in Morocco, in collaboration with the US government's Prosper Africa initiative, recently hosted the US-Morocco Venture Capital Forum in Marrakech. This two-day event, held on May 27-28, aimed to strengthen US-Morocco commercial ties and open new investment opportunities in the region. Timed strategically before GITEX Africa 2024, Africa's leading tech and startup exhibition, the forum gathered US and regional venture capital (VC) investors, Moroccan government officials, and prominent Moroccan startup founders at the forefront of innovation.

The attending startups are pioneering advancements in sectors such as climate, health, agriculture, fintech, and deeptech, addressing significant local and regional challenges. This event highlights Morocco's crucial role as the United States' oldest and closest ally in Africa, and the only African nation with a free trade agreement (FTA) with the US. This relationship facilitates substantial economic interactions, with over 150 US companies currently operating in Morocco's key sectors.

Morocco's rise as a continental economic powerhouse has established the North African nation as a strategic gateway for businesses and investors looking to engage with the continent's diverse and dynamic markets. During the forum, US Ambassador Puneet Talwar emphasized the mutual benefits of US investments in Morocco, stating, "The United States government also makes investments in Morocco. And we enjoy an extraordinary return on our investment." Talwar expressed confidence in Morocco's value proposition, urging investors to "form deep, lasting, and transformative partnerships here in Morocco," as it promises a favorable return on investment.

British Robinson, Prosper Africa Coordinator, echoed Talwar's sentiments, highlighting the promising future of Moroccan startups. "Morocco's startups are poised for take-off. Prosper Africa recognizes their potential and is proud to have brought US venture capital funds, along with their African VC peers, to meet a selection of Africa's most talented entrepreneurs," Robinson stated.

The event featured prominent Moroccan government representatives, including Delegate-Minister to the Head of Government of Investment, Convergence and the Evaluation of Public Policies Mohcine Jazouli, and Minister Delegate in charge of Digital Transition and Administration Reform Ghita Mezzour, who addressed the forum. Matchmaking sessions facilitated direct interactions between startups and venture capitalists, fostering potential partnerships and investments.

This initiative aligns with the US government's broader commitments to boosting US-Africa trade and investment, fostering mutual growth and prosperity for both nations. As Moroccan startups continue to soar, this forum has opened new doors, paving the way for strategic investments and transformative partnerships that will shape the future of innovation in the region.
