German automakers suffer steep China sales decline as local rivals gain momentum
German automotive manufacturers experienced another difficult quarter in China, with Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and BMW reporting significant declines in vehicle sales as competition from domestic brands intensified in the world's largest automobile market.
The latest figures highlight the mounting challenges facing established international carmakers as Chinese manufacturers continue to strengthen their position through advanced technology, competitive pricing and rapidly expanding electric vehicle portfolios.
Volkswagen records the sharpest decline
Among Germany's leading manufacturers, Volkswagen posted the steepest contraction in China during the April-to-June period, with sales falling 37% compared with the same quarter a year earlier.
Mercedes-Benz and BMW also recorded declines exceeding 30%, underscoring the broad-based pressure confronting premium and mass-market European brands alike.
The results reflect an increasingly competitive environment in which Chinese automakers have accelerated innovation while expanding their share of the domestic market.
China's auto market remains under pressure
The disappointing quarterly performance coincides with continued weakness across China's automotive sector. National vehicle sales declined for a ninth consecutive month in June, pointing to subdued consumer demand despite efforts by manufacturers to stimulate purchases through discounts and new model launches.
The prolonged slowdown has created a particularly challenging landscape for foreign manufacturers, many of whom have traditionally relied on China as one of their largest and most profitable markets.
Technology race reshapes competition
Beyond weaker demand, German manufacturers are facing growing pressure to adapt to changing consumer preferences, particularly in the areas of electric mobility, digital connectivity and intelligent driving technologies.
Chinese automakers have rapidly expanded their capabilities in software integration, battery technology and smart vehicle features, giving them a competitive advantage among domestic buyers increasingly seeking technologically advanced vehicles.
As a result, international brands are being forced to accelerate product development and strengthen their local partnerships to remain competitive.
Strategic challenge for global manufacturers
The second-quarter sales figures reinforce the strategic importance of China for Europe's automotive industry. Continued market weakness and intensifying domestic competition are expected to influence investment decisions, product strategies and future growth plans for German manufacturers operating in the country.
With China's automotive landscape evolving rapidly, global carmakers face increasing pressure to adapt their offerings and regain momentum in a market that remains central to the industry's long-term outlook.
