Turkish and Iranian foreign ministers discuss regional developments and ceasefire
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi held a telephone conversation on Thursday to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East, including the current status of the ceasefire amid renewed regional tensions.
According to sources from Türkiye's Foreign Ministry, the two ministers exchanged views on recent developments across the region and assessed the evolving ceasefire situation. Officials did not disclose additional details regarding the content of the discussions.
The diplomatic contact comes at a time of heightened instability following renewed military exchanges between the United States and Iran. The latest escalation follows U.S. strikes carried out for a second consecutive day after Tehran targeted vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important maritime routes for global energy shipments.
Iran has maintained that commercial vessels should coordinate with its authorities before navigating the waterway and has insisted that ships use only the designated passage approved by Tehran.
The renewed tensions follow the collapse of a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding reached on June 17, which had been intended to halt hostilities between the United States and Iran and lay the groundwork for a broader peace agreement.
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the agreement was no longer in effect, a statement that coincided with a new round of military confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
Against this backdrop, diplomatic engagement between regional powers such as Türkiye and Iran is expected to remain an important channel for monitoring developments and assessing prospects for de-escalation.
