Greece announces summer fuel price cuts after government deal with refineries
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced a government agreement with major oil refineries aimed at reducing gasoline and diesel prices for consumers during the summer period.
The measure is designed to limit the impact of rising energy costs linked to renewed tensions in the Middle East, which have contributed to pressure on global fuel markets.
Speaking on Friday, Mitsotakis said the agreement with refinery operators would help ease the financial burden on households and businesses by lowering fuel costs at a time when consumers remain sensitive to inflationary pressures.
The deal involves Greece’s major refining companies, including HELLENiQ ENERGY and Motor Oil Hellas, as the government seeks to contain the effects of international oil price volatility on the domestic economy.
Greece has made a significant economic recovery since the debt crisis that lasted from 2009 to 2018, a period marked by strict austerity measures, wage reductions and international bailout programs.
Since taking office in 2019, Mitsotakis’ government has focused on economic support policies, including tax reductions and salary increases, while attempting to maintain growth and improve household purchasing power.
The fuel price initiative comes as European governments continue to monitor energy markets and look for ways to protect consumers from external shocks affecting oil and transportation costs.
Authorities expect the summer agreement to provide short-term relief for drivers while broader economic policies continue to address the challenges of energy affordability and inflation.
