Trump rejects bipartisan housing affordability bill, protests Senate inaction

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will not sign a bipartisan housing affordability bill, distancing himself from one of the few major legislative initiatives to secure support from both Democrats and Republicans in the deeply divided U.S. Congress.

In a statement published on social media, Trump dismissed the legislation as “a big yawn” and said his refusal to sign the measure was intended as a political protest rather than a veto.

According to the president, his decision is linked to the Senate’s failure to advance the SAVE AMERICA Act, legislation he considers a higher legislative priority. Trump argued that the upper chamber has been unable to deliver on that measure, prompting him to withhold his signature from the housing bill despite its bipartisan backing.

Bill expected to become law despite presidential refusal

Although Trump has chosen not to formally endorse the legislation, the housing affordability bill is still expected to become law. Under U.S. constitutional procedures, legislation approved by Congress can take effect without a president’s signature if it is neither signed nor vetoed within the prescribed timeframe while Congress remains in session.

The move underscores Trump's effort to separate his political agenda from a compromise bill that had attracted support across party lines. Rather than blocking the measure outright, the president is using the signing process to express dissatisfaction with Senate priorities.

Rare bipartisan breakthrough

The housing affordability package had been viewed as an uncommon example of bipartisan cooperation at a time when legislative gridlock has dominated Washington. With lawmakers from both major parties backing the proposal, the bill represented one of the few significant areas of consensus on domestic policy.

Trump’s decision highlights ongoing tensions between the White House and Congress over legislative priorities, even as lawmakers occasionally find common ground on issues with broad public impact.

While the housing measure is poised to move forward, the president’s public criticism reinforces his focus on advancing the SAVE AMERICA Act and signals that political disputes over the Senate’s agenda remain far from resolved.
