Government rolls out flood relief program under royal instructions
Following directives from HM king Mohammed VI, the Moroccan government has launched a comprehensive aid and support program for communities affected by severe flooding in the northern and western regions of the country.
The floods, triggered by exceptionally heavy rainfall recorded over the past two months, caused significant material damage and disrupted the lives of hundreds of families. In response, authorities announced a coordinated national plan aimed at delivering immediate relief while laying the groundwork for medium-term recovery.
According to an official statement, all relevant ministries and public agencies have been mobilized to ensure the effective implementation of the program. The plan was developed after an on-the-ground assessment to identify the most urgent needs of affected households.
Direct financial assistance
Under the program, direct emergency financial support of up to 6,000 dirhams per affected family will be distributed starting next week. In addition, households whose homes or small businesses sustained damage will be eligible for rehabilitation grants of 15,000 dirhams. For families whose homes collapsed due to flooding, reconstruction aid of up to 140,000 dirhams has been allocated.
To facilitate access to emergency assistance, heads of affected families are required to submit a request via SMS, including their national electronic identity card number and date of birth. Authorities say this digital procedure is intended to speed up verification and ensure that funds reach beneficiaries as quickly as possible.
Field assessments and transparency measures
Specialized local commissions will conduct detailed field surveys in officially designated disaster zones to assess damage to residential properties and commercial premises. Affected individuals will have the opportunity to submit their cases for review in accordance with existing regulatory frameworks. Officials emphasized that transparency and fairness will guide the allocation of funds.
Support for the agricultural sector
The relief program also includes targeted measures for farmers impacted by the floods. A spring cropping initiative tailored to the specific conditions of affected regions will be introduced, covering oilseed, cereal, and fodder crops. The government plans to support the purchase of seeds and fertilizers to help farmers recover lost production time. Assistance for livestock breeders will continue as part of broader rural support efforts.
Authorities underlined that the initiative reflects a proactive approach to risk management and disaster response. Logistical resources have been mobilized to ensure safe evacuations where necessary and to facilitate the swift return of displaced families to their homes once conditions allow.
Through this program, the government aims not only to provide immediate financial relief but also to strengthen resilience in the face of increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
