Lebanon: “Serious Drone Attack” targets UN peacekeepers

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported on Wednesday one of the most serious Israeli attacks against its personnel since the ceasefire that ended the conflict between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah in November 2024.

“Yesterday morning, Israeli military drones dropped four grenades near UNIFIL peacekeepers clearing roadblocks obstructing access to a UN position close to the Blue Line,” the UN mission said in a statement. “This is one of the most serious attacks on UNIFIL personnel and property since November,” it added, without reporting any casualties.

According to UNIFIL, one grenade landed less than 20 meters away and three others around 100 meters from UN vehicles and personnel. The UN mission also noted that the Israeli army had been informed in advance of the clearance operations, which were suspended after the incident.

UNIFIL condemned the attack as a “serious violation of Resolution 1701 and international law.” The UN Security Council recently decided to extend UNIFIL’s mandate for the last time, scheduling its withdrawal for 2027 under pressure from the United States and Israel.

The ceasefire, mediated by the US, ended more than a year of conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, including two months of open warfare. The agreement allows only the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers to operate in southern Lebanon, excluding both Hezbollah and Israeli forces. Nevertheless, Israel maintains troops in five strategic positions near the border and regularly strikes Hezbollah sites and officials.
