Microsoft unveils Project Helix, next generation Xbox with PC gaming support
Microsoft Gaming chief executive Asha Sharma announced Wednesday that the company’s next generation Xbox console is operating under the codename Project Helix, confirming the device will support both Xbox and PC games in what could become the company’s most ambitious hardware platform.
Sharma said the console will focus on top tier performance while allowing players to access games from both ecosystems. She added that Microsoft plans to discuss the project in greater detail with developers and partners during the upcoming Game Developers Conference.
The announcement confirms long circulating industry reports about a hybrid console designed to merge the Xbox and PC gaming environments. Earlier reporting by Windows Central described a future Xbox platform built on Windows 11 capable of running games from several digital distribution services, including Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Advanced hardware is also under development for the system. AMD chief executive Lisa Su confirmed during a February earnings call that a processor being designed for the console, internally known as Magnus, is progressing toward a potential launch window in 2027.
Previous Xbox leadership had already hinted at a significant leap in hardware capabilities. Former Xbox president Sarah Bond described the next generation device as a premium console experience. The system is expected to maintain full backward compatibility with Xbox One and Xbox Series titles while expanding access to PC game libraries.
Sharma’s announcement comes just two weeks after she was appointed chief executive of Microsoft Gaming, replacing longtime Xbox leader Phil Spencer. Before joining Microsoft, Sharma held senior positions at Instacart and Meta.
In her introductory message to employees, she pledged to renew Microsoft’s gaming strategy with a stronger focus on high quality titles and continued support for console hardware.
The early reveal also reflects growing pressure in the console market. Revenue from Xbox hardware has declined for three consecutive fiscal years, while competition is intensifying from the next generation of Nintendo and Sony systems, including the expected Switch successor and PlayStation 6, both widely anticipated for the 2027 to 2028 timeframe.
More information about Project Helix is expected at the Game Developers Conference 2026, scheduled from March 10 to March 14 in San Francisco. Microsoft has already planned developer sessions focused on DirectX and next generation tools. The company is also expected to host a broader Xbox Games Showcase later in the spring.
Whether the new console can help Xbox regain market share will depend on its final design and developer adoption, but Microsoft’s message is clear: the company intends to remain a major player in the console market.
