Morocco and USA launch polysilicon plant in Tan-Tan

Tan-Tan, Morocco – Morocco and the United States have announced the creation of a new industrial unit dedicated to polysilicon production in the southern province of Tan-Tan. The agreement was signed by Karim Zidane, Morocco’s Minister Delegate for Investment, Convergence, and Public Policy Evaluation, and Philip Jenkins, CEO of the American company GPM Holding.

The project involves an investment of 8 billion dirhams and is expected to create 1,500 direct jobs and over 2,000 indirect positions, with an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons, 85% of which will be exported to international markets.

Classified as a strategic project in February 2024 by Morocco’s National Investment Commission, the initiative supports the country’s renewable energy strategy and strengthens the industrial value chain for solar panel components. It aims to position Morocco as a key player in the global energy transition.

A cooperation protocol between the ministry, the local authorities of Guelmim-Oued Noun and Tan-Tan, and GPM Holding has also been established. This protocol focuses on regional support for the project, fostering local economic integration, developing an industrial ecosystem, and training young talents in coordination with educational institutions, enhancing both local employability and the regional industrial sector.

The Ministry highlighted that the initiative aligns with HM King Mohammed VI’s directives to promote productive investment, generate employment, and reduce regional disparities in southern Morocco.
