Trump highlights close ties with Honduras president

Former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly highlighted his close relationship with the new president of Honduras, Nasry Asfura, following a meeting held at his residence in Florida. The encounter underlined Washington’s renewed interest in strengthening ties with conservative governments in Central America.

Asfura, a former construction entrepreneur aged 67, took office in late January after an election marked by delays and allegations of irregularities. His victory ended four years of left-wing leadership in Honduras and positioned the country among a growing group of right-leaning governments in Latin America viewed favorably by Trump.

Speaking on his social media platform, Trump described Asfura as a “friend” and emphasized shared values centered on national priorities and security. According to Trump, discussions focused on bilateral cooperation, including security partnerships, trade, and potential investments.

The meeting has drawn criticism from the outgoing Honduran leadership, which accused Trump of interfering in the electoral process. During the campaign, the former U.S. president had openly supported Asfura and reportedly warned that U.S. aid could be reconsidered if his preferred candidate lost.

Relations between the two countries carry significant economic and social weight. The United States is the main destination for Honduran exports and home to a large Honduran diaspora, whose remittances account for a substantial share of the country’s economy.
