ChatGPT introduces stricter protections for teenage users

OpenAI is rolling out a new version of ChatGPT designed specifically to provide teenagers with a more controlled and safety-focused experience. The company says the initiative aims to identify users who may be under 18 and automatically apply additional protections to their accounts.

The new experience, known as ChatGPT for Teens, combines educational features with stronger safeguards intended to reduce potential risks associated with younger users interacting with artificial intelligence.

OpenAI says teenagers will not need to create separate accounts. When the system determines that a user is likely to be under 18, or when the user provides information indicating that they are a minor, the teen-focused experience can become the default setting.

Education is one of the main elements of the new approach. The company is encouraging younger users to make greater use of Study Mode, a feature designed to guide students through problems rather than simply providing them with immediate answers.

The learning system uses a step-by-step approach that can encourage users to think through a question and develop their own understanding. OpenAI has also expanded the visual material available through its educational tools, allowing concepts to be explained through diagrams and other generated resources.

Another feature, called Study Hours, is intended to help teenagers dedicate specific periods of the day to schoolwork. Users can establish these periods themselves, while parents with linked accounts can also select appropriate schedules.

During designated study periods, Study Mode can be activated automatically. The system may also encourage younger users to use the educational mode when their conversations suggest that they are attempting to avoid completing school assignments.

Safety protections are being strengthened beyond education. OpenAI says the teen experience will impose clearer limits on emotional interactions between the chatbot and younger users.

Under the new approach, ChatGPT should avoid presenting itself as a human friend, suggesting that it has personal emotions or claiming to possess consciousness. The company is also introducing more frequent reminders encouraging teenagers to take breaks and reminding them that they are interacting with an artificial intelligence system.

Teenagers and their parents can also establish quiet hours during which ChatGPT will not be available. OpenAI says customization options for younger users have been designed to preserve a clear distinction between using an AI tool and developing an interaction that resembles a human relationship.

Parental notifications are another part of the expanded safety strategy. OpenAI says parents whose accounts are connected to those of their teenagers may receive alerts when conversations indicate serious risks, including certain situations involving violent threats or eating disorders.

According to the company, conversations identified as potentially serious are reviewed by trained staff before a notification is sent to parents. Alerts may be delivered through text messages, email and the application, with OpenAI aiming to notify parents within a relatively short period after a concerning interaction is identified.

The system nevertheless faces an important challenge: accurately determining a user's age. No age-estimation technology is completely reliable, and teenagers may attempt to circumvent restrictions by providing inaccurate information or finding technical ways around safety measures.

OpenAI acknowledges that protecting younger users is an ongoing process and that the new system will require continued development. The company says it wants teenagers to benefit from artificial intelligence for education and other legitimate purposes while reducing the risks associated with inappropriate or overly dependent use.

The rollout of ChatGPT for Teens represents another step in the technology industry's broader effort to establish stronger safeguards for minors using generative artificial intelligence. As AI assistants become increasingly integrated into education and everyday life, questions surrounding age verification, parental oversight, emotional boundaries and digital safety are likely to remain central to the debate.

OpenAI has begun making the teen-focused experience available internationally and expects the rollout to continue over the coming weeks.
