WestJet flight attendants strike disrupts summer travel across Canada

Thousands of passengers across Canada are facing travel disruptions after WestJet flight attendants launched a strike following the collapse of contract negotiations, forcing the country's second-largest airline to cancel hundreds of flights during the peak summer holiday season.

The industrial action began after last-minute bargaining efforts failed to produce a new collective agreement between the airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents approximately 4,400 cabin crew members.

Before the strike officially started, WestJet had already cancelled 309 flights scheduled through Sunday evening in anticipation of the walkout.

Pay dispute at the center of negotiations

The central issue in the labor dispute concerns how flight attendants are compensated for their working time.

CUPE is seeking to change the current pay structure so that cabin crew are paid from the moment they report for duty and complete pre-flight responsibilities until they officially finish their shifts. Under the existing system, flight attendants are primarily paid only while the aircraft is in motion, a compensation model that unions have increasingly challenged across North America.

Union leaders argue that pre-flight safety inspections, passenger boarding, operational briefings and post-flight responsibilities are essential parts of the job and should be fully compensated.

Airline promises support for affected travelers

WestJet has stated that customers affected by the cancellations will be offered either refunds or alternative travel arrangements where possible.

The airline has urged passengers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport, warning that additional disruptions could occur if the strike continues.

The walkout comes at one of the busiest travel periods of the year, increasing pressure on both the airline and union negotiators to reach a settlement quickly.

Part of a broader labor movement

The dispute reflects a wider push by flight attendants in both Canada and the United States to modernize compensation practices that have remained largely unchanged for decades.

Last year, cabin crew at Air Canada also staged a four-day work stoppage over similar concerns regarding wages and working conditions, highlighting growing dissatisfaction throughout the airline industry.

Union remains open to further negotiations

Although the strike has now begun, CUPE says it remains willing to return to the bargaining table.

Union representatives stated that discussions continued until the final hours before the walkout but concluded that WestJet's latest proposal did not adequately address members' concerns. They emphasized that the strike is intended to secure fairer compensation rather than prolong operational disruption.

As negotiations continue, the outcome could influence future labor agreements across Canada's aviation sector, where employee groups are increasingly pressing for compensation models that better reflect the full scope of cabin crew responsibilities.
