Unidentified body found on Amtar beach near Chefchaouen triggers investigation

Authorities in northern Morocco have launched an investigation after the discovery of an unidentified human body on Amtar beach in the province of Chefchaouen, an incident that has prompted forensic procedures and a formal inquiry into the circumstances of the death.

The body was found on Sunday, June 28, 2026, along the coastal area of Amtar under unclear conditions. Local residents reportedly alerted authorities after spotting the remains on the shoreline, prompting an immediate response from security services.

Elements of the Royal Gendarmerie, civil protection units, and local authorities were deployed to the scene to secure the area and conduct initial examinations. The site was cordoned off while investigators carried out standard procedures to preserve evidence.

The remains were later transferred to the morgue under instructions from the competent public prosecutor’s office. An autopsy has been ordered in order to determine the cause and approximate time of death, as well as to assist in identifying the deceased.

At this stage, officials have not released any information regarding the identity of the individual or possible circumstances leading to the death. Investigators are also working to determine whether the case involves an accident, a criminal act, or other unexplained factors.

A formal inquiry has been opened by the Royal Gendarmerie under judicial supervision. Authorities emphasized that all hypotheses remain under consideration as forensic experts continue their analysis.

The discovery has raised concern locally, particularly given the lack of identification and the mysterious nature of the case. Further updates are expected as investigative findings become available.
