UN and Morocco to host anti-terrorism platform in June
The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and Morocco are set to organize the Marrakech Platform in June, as announced by Vladimir Voronkov, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, during a briefing to member states referenced by Barlamane.com.
This event will bring together representatives from states, regional organizations, and experts, marking a significant step in the enhanced cooperation between the UN and Morocco. The gathering aims to establish a training academy, enrich the program dedicated to specialized investigations in counter-terrorism, and expand the framework of fusion cells designed to improve information sharing.
Voronkov emphasized the UN's commitment to assisting member states in protecting sensitive sites, highlighting a meeting of experts from West African countries and sharing experiences regarding security for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be coordinated in New York. The UNOCT also plans to partner with FIFA for the 2026 World Cup and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
During his speech, Voronkov pointed out the worsening terrorist threat, particularly in the Sahel region, where violence has tripled since 2020. In response to this escalating situation, the UN intends to renew a joint appeal for counter-terrorism efforts in Africa to mobilize resources that meet the states' needs.
Morocco remains a key partner in these initiatives, continuing its commitment alongside the UN to enhance international cooperation and the effectiveness of terrorism prevention and suppression mechanisms.
