Denmark says Europe needs a trusted partner like Morocco

Denmark has reaffirmed its interest in strengthening ties with Morocco, with Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen describing the North African country as a reliable partner for both Copenhagen and Europe.

Speaking to Danish media following a meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, in Copenhagen on Friday, Rasmussen said the discussions had produced positive results and laid the groundwork for a strategic partnership between the two countries.

The planned agreement is expected to cover several areas, including political and security cooperation, economic relations, investment and climate-related issues. The two sides are reportedly working toward signing the partnership in Rabat in December, while seeking to ensure that the agreement delivers tangible benefits for both countries.

Economic cooperation is also expected to receive greater attention. Denmark and Morocco are preparing to establish a bilateral chamber of commerce aimed at supporting business relations and creating new opportunities for companies in both markets.

Security cooperation was another key topic discussed during the meeting. The two foreign ministers examined issues including extradition, with Copenhagen and Rabat expected to pursue further discussions on the matter within the framework of the future strategic partnership.

The talks also addressed the Western Sahara issue. Rasmussen reiterated Denmark’s support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, while indicating that Copenhagen could further develop its position in a direction closer to that of the United States.

The Danish foreign minister also described Morocco as an important ally on Europe’s southern flank, underscoring the country’s growing relevance to European security and regional cooperation.

Bourita’s visit to Denmark comes as Morocco continues to strengthen its diplomatic and economic relations with European countries. The planned strategic partnership could provide a broader framework for cooperation between Rabat and Copenhagen, particularly in areas such as security, trade, investment and climate policy.

The initiative reflects the wider importance of Morocco as a European partner in North Africa, with its geographical position and expanding economic links with Europe making bilateral cooperation increasingly significant for both sides.
