Anthropic moves closer to a landmark IPO amid intensifying AI competition
Anthropic is reportedly moving closer to a major step into the public markets as the artificial intelligence sector enters a new phase of intense competition and investor scrutiny. The AI company is said to be nearing the selection of a group of leading global investment banks to oversee its long-awaited initial public offering.
Morgan Stanley is expected to take a leading advisory role in the potential listing, while Goldman Sachs could be involved in supporting the stock once trading begins. JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Barclays are also reportedly being considered as part of the banking group, building on their previous involvement in financing Anthropic through debt arrangements.
The potential IPO comes as Anthropic’s valuation has risen sharply, reflecting strong investor confidence in the company’s growth prospects and the expanding demand for generative AI technologies. Market expectations reportedly place its current valuation at more than $900 billion, while a potential public listing could target a valuation approaching $2 trillion.
Such figures would put Anthropic among the world’s most highly valued technology companies. At the same time, the scale of the anticipated valuation would place considerable pressure on the company to demonstrate that its rapid growth can be sustained and supported by strong underlying financial performance.
Anthropic has experienced a significant increase in revenue in recent months. Its reported annualized revenue reached approximately $65 billion in July, up from around $47 billion in May, highlighting the speed at which demand for its AI products and services has expanded.
According to the expected timetable, Anthropic could begin meeting with prospective investors toward the end of September, potentially paving the way for a stock-market debut in early October. The timeline, however, remains subject to change as the company finalizes its plans and regulatory requirements.
The potential listing comes against the backdrop of an increasingly competitive AI industry. Anthropic is competing with major technology companies and AI developers, including OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, as businesses and consumers rapidly adopt AI-powered tools and services.
An Anthropic IPO at such a substantial valuation would therefore attract attention far beyond the company itself. It could provide an important indication of how public markets view the enormous valuations currently assigned to fast-growing AI companies and whether investors remain willing to finance businesses requiring substantial capital to develop computing infrastructure and advanced models.
For Anthropic, one of the central challenges will be convincing investors that its exceptional revenue growth can continue over the longer term. The company will also need to demonstrate a credible path toward improving financial sustainability as competition increases and the cost of developing increasingly sophisticated AI systems remains high.
If Anthropic succeeds in reaching a valuation close to $2 trillion, its debut could become one of the most closely watched technology IPOs in years. It would also serve as a significant test of investor confidence in artificial intelligence and the sector’s ability to produce a new generation of global technology giants.
