Rwanda: Over 14 Billion Dollars to Sustainably Transform Agriculture

Rwanda aims to accelerate the modernization of its agriculture sector. The country has announced a vast funding program exceeding 14 billion dollars, intended to strengthen and transform its agricultural sector over several decades. This strategy was unveiled in Kigali during the Africa Food Systems Forum.

A Long-Term Agricultural Strategy

Rwanda intends to embed the development of its agriculture in the long term. In Kigali, the Ministry of Economic Planning and the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources presented several initiatives aimed at mobilizing significant funding to modernize the sector.

The total represents a budget of over 14 billion dollars, intended to support the transformation of agricultural systems and promote more sustainable resource management.

The announcements were made during the 2026 edition of the Africa Food Systems Forum, which concluded on Friday in the Rwandan capital.

A 9.2 Billion Dollar Plan by 2050

Among the main initiatives presented is the investment framework dedicated to sustainable landscape management. This program, which extends until 2050, represents 9.2 billion dollars on its own.

The funding is set to be deployed gradually, with an initial phase targeted by 2030. This initial phase will mobilize approximately 2.3 billion dollars.

The stated goal is to lay the groundwork for a transformation that will continue over several decades in the coming years.

Focusing on Long-Term Investments

Through this strategy, Rwanda seeks to move beyond an approach limited to the immediate needs of the agricultural sector. The announced planning is instead based on successive investments aimed at supporting the evolution of food systems and landscape management.

The choice of a horizon extending to 2050 also reflects the authorities' desire to provide long-term visibility to agricultural and environmental projects.

Kigali Aims to Accelerate Agricultural Transformation

This financial mobilization is part of a broader reflection on the future of African food systems. By presenting these initiatives during a continental forum dedicated to this issue, Rwanda aims to highlight a strategy based on modernization, sustainability, and the mobilization of long-term capital.

With over 14 billion dollars announced, Kigali thus showcases a major ambition: to make agricultural investment a sustainable lever for the country's transformation.
