Turbulence at Diass Airport: Boeing Incident Raises Safety Concerns

In a dramatic turn of events that sent shockwaves through Senegal's aviation industry, a Boeing aircraft chartered by Air Sénégal veered off the runway upon takeoff from Diass International Airport, leaving 11 individuals injured. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, has prompted authorities to launch a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the mishap.

Eyewitness accounts and media footage captured the harrowing scene, depicting the aircraft resting in a grassy terrain, surrounded by emergency personnel tending to the injured. Plumes of smoke and flames were visible in the vicinity of the stricken plane, adding to the air of urgency that gripped the nation.

In the wake of the incident, the Diass International Airport, located near Dakar, was temporarily closed to air traffic. However, in a statement released by LAS, the consortium responsible for managing the airport's operations, the facility has since reopened, and normal operations have resumed.

The incident, which occurred around 1:00 a.m. local time, involved a Boeing 737/300 aircraft chartered from the private carrier Transair and destined for Bamako. According to LAS, the aircraft sustained a runway excursion, prompting the activation of emergency protocols and the subsequent closure of the airport.

Of the 78 passengers on board, four individuals sustained serious injuries, while six others were admitted to the airport's medical facilities for observation. The flight crew, consisting of two pilots and four cabin crew members, was also present during the incident.

The Ministry of Transport, in a separate statement, corroborated the details, reporting 79 passengers and 10 injured individuals, including one pilot.

As the investigation unfolds, LAS has assured the public that specialists from the aviation industry, as well as representatives from Air Sénégal, are on-site to meticulously examine the flight data and interview crew members. The Bureau of Inquiry and Analysis (BEA) has also initiated an independent probe to determine the root causes of the accident.

This incident comes at a time when Air Sénégal, the state-controlled airline launched in 2018, has faced mounting criticism over service quality issues. Passengers have frequently voiced concerns about delays affecting both domestic and international flights, casting a shadow over the carrier's operations.

Coincidentally, Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, has also endured a turbulent period, with multiple incidents and the recent launch of an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) into three of its commercial aircraft models.
