Trial of Dominique Pelicot Expands as Six New Defendants Face Rape Allegations

The trial of Dominique Pelicot, which has shocked the nation, entered its fourth week in a French court with six additional defendants facing rape charges. Pelicot, who has confessed to the allegations, is accused of orchestrating the drugging and rape of his wife by dozens of men over nearly a decade.

The 71-year-old has been on trial since the beginning of the month, alongside 50 other men aged between 26 and 74. While many of the accused deny the charges, one individual has been alleged to have raped his own wife during the assaults.

On Monday, the court in Avignon heard new testimonies, although Pelicot himself was not scheduled to speak until later in the week. His former wife, Gisèle Pelicot, also 71, arrived to a public show of support, receiving applause from attendees.

Remaining composed, she listened as the court presented psychological profiles of six of her alleged assailants. Among them was Joan K, the youngest of the co-defendants, who was 22 when the alleged assaults took place. He is accused of visiting the Pelicots' home in Mazan on two occasions to assault Gisèle.

Originally from French Guiana, Joan K moved to Avignon to live with his brother at age 16, before joining the military. His relationship with a woman he met online was reportedly troubled, with frequent disputes and infidelity. At the time of their separation, his partner was pregnant, and Joan K was absent during the birth of their daughter in November 2019—on one of the alleged dates he assaulted Gisèle Pelicot.

The court described Joan K as a man with depressive tendencies, and his testimony is expected later this week. The charges against five other men—Andy R, 37; Hugues M, 39; Husamettin D, 43; Mathieu D, 62; and Fabien S, 39—will also be addressed, all of whom are alleged to have visited the Pelicot residence once.

Gisèle Pelicot has become a symbol of feminist resilience, earning widespread admiration for her insistence on holding a public trial to highlight the use of drugs in sexual abuse. Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets in solidarity with her cause.
