Three men stand trial in Germany over alleged espionage for Moscow

German authorities have opened a high-profile trial against three men accused of spying on behalf of Russia, in a case highlighting the growing tensions and intelligence battles unfolding in Europe since the start of the war in Ukraine.

The defendants — a Russian, a Ukrainian, and an Armenian national — appeared before a Frankfurt court on Tuesday. They are suspected of gathering information about a former Ukrainian soldier living in Germany. Prosecutors believe the surveillance could have paved the way for a planned attack against the man, who had previously fought Russian forces.

The investigation indicates that the Armenian suspect was reportedly instructed by Russian intelligence in early May 2024 to track the Ukrainian veteran. According to prosecutors, he then recruited the two other men to assist him. The trio arranged a meeting with their target under false pretenses in a Frankfurt café on June 19, hoping to obtain more detailed information.

However, the intended target had already alerted German police, leading to the immediate arrest of the suspects. All three have remained in custody since June 2024.

The trial, scheduled to run until March 2026, comes at a time when Germany reports an increase in espionage attempts, disinformation campaigns, and sabotage activities attributed to Russia. Berlin, one of Kyiv’s strongest European allies, has repeatedly been cited as a key target of Moscow’s so-called “hybrid warfare.”

Russian officials have issued no immediate comment on the case but routinely deny involvement in espionage operations abroad. In recent years, Germany has uncovered multiple incidents linked to Russian intelligence, including cases involving cyberattacks, sabotage plots, and the transmission of classified data by insiders.

The heightened scrutiny reflects the broader security concerns gripping Europe as the war in Ukraine reshapes geopolitical dynamics and intensifies intelligence confrontations on the continent.
