Lance Armstrong criticizes overnight anti-doping tests during Tour de France
Former cycling champion Lance Armstrong has sparked fresh debate over anti-doping procedures at the Tour de France, condemning overnight testing carried out on race favorites Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard.
The controversy follows reports that anti-doping officials conducted surprise controls during the night between Saturday and Sunday, with Vingegaard reportedly awakened around 2:00 a.m. and Pogačar several hours later. The timing of the tests has prompted criticism from riders and observers who argue that disrupting athletes' sleep during a three-week endurance race could affect performance and recovery.
Speaking on his podcast TheMove, Armstrong described the overnight checks as excessive, arguing that waking competitors in the middle of the night amounted to "a violation of human rights." While emphasizing that anti-doping testing is necessary, he questioned the decision to carry out controls during sleeping hours rather than at more conventional times.
The International Testing Agency (ITA), which has overseen anti-doping operations in professional cycling since 2021, defended its approach by explaining that testing may be conducted outside the usual daytime window when operationally justified. The organization maintains that unannounced controls remain a cornerstone of efforts to preserve fair competition and deter the use of prohibited substances.
The incident has reignited a longstanding discussion within professional cycling about balancing rigorous anti-doping enforcement with athletes' welfare. Recovery, particularly sleep, is widely regarded as a critical component of performance during the Tour de France, one of the most physically demanding events in world sport.
Armstrong's intervention has drawn particular attention because of his own history. The American was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles in 2012 after a major doping investigation uncovered years of systematic performance-enhancing drug use. His comments therefore come from one of the sport's most controversial figures, whose legacy continues to influence discussions surrounding anti-doping policies.
