Trump demands compensation from Canada over Ontario wildfire smoke impact

US President Donald Trump has called on Canada to consider compensating the United States for the effects of smoke caused by major wildfires in Ontario, which affected air quality across several American border regions.

Trump said he raised the issue with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, urging Ottawa to take stronger action to control the extensive wildfires that have sent large amounts of smoke into parts of the United States. The pollution has raised health concerns and prompted American authorities to issue air quality warnings in several areas.

Speaking to reporters after returning from the FIFA World Cup final, Trump said that while he maintained a good relationship with Carney, Canada should do more to address the situation. He suggested that compensation or possible economic measures, including tariffs, could be considered if efforts to contain the fires were not improved.

The comments came shortly after Trump warned that additional tariffs on Canadian goods could be introduced as a way to pressure Ottawa over its response to the wildfire crisis.

Smoke from hundreds of wildfires in Ontario spread across a wide area of the United States, affecting regions from the Midwest to the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic. Authorities in several states advised residents to limit outdoor activities and take precautions due to deteriorating air quality.

The dispute highlights the growing challenges linked to cross-border environmental issues, as climate-related events increasingly affect neighboring countries and require cooperation between governments. Despite political tensions, both Canada and the United States continue to face the broader challenge of managing the impact of increasingly severe wildfire seasons.
