Cyberattack targets Kenyan President William Ruto’s official website

Kenyan authorities have launched an investigation following a cyberattack that disrupted the official website of President William Ruto, prompting an immediate response from the country's cybersecurity agencies.

According to the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, incident response protocols were activated as soon as the breach was detected. The affected website was temporarily taken offline to allow cybersecurity specialists to conduct a forensic investigation and restore normal operations.

Officials said there is currently no evidence that sensitive government data was accessed or leaked during the incident. They also confirmed that other government digital services and online platforms remain secure and continue to operate without disruption.

Kenya's information and communications technology authorities are working closely with government agencies and technical partners to determine how the attack occurred, identify those responsible, and strengthen security measures against future cyber threats.

Local media reports suggested that the website's homepage was replaced with a message demanding a ransom of five Bitcoin and threatening to release confidential information. However, the Kenyan government has not confirmed those claims, stating that investigators have so far found no indication that official data has been compromised.

The incident highlights the growing cybersecurity challenges facing governments worldwide as public institutions increasingly rely on digital infrastructure. Government websites are frequent targets for cybercriminals seeking financial gain, political influence, or disruption of public services.

Cybersecurity experts stress that protecting official digital platforms requires continuous monitoring, rapid incident response capabilities, regular security updates, and cooperation between public institutions and private-sector specialists. As investigations continue, Kenyan authorities are expected to review existing cybersecurity measures to further strengthen the resilience of the country's digital infrastructure.
