Tafouk TV: Sahel Alliance launches a shared television network

The Alliance of Sahel States, known by its French acronym AES, has added a new institution to its growing network of shared structures with the launch of Tafouk TV, a television channel designed to serve the three-member bloc of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Based in Bamako, the channel began its regular programming on September 16, 2026, marking a new stage in the development of a common media infrastructure for the three countries. The launch is part of a broader effort by the AES authorities to develop communication platforms capable of reaching audiences across the region.

The name “Tafouk”, meaning “sun” in Tamasheq, reflects the cultural identity attached to the project. The channel presents itself as a platform intended to promote regional cultures and languages while providing coverage of the activities and policies of the confederation.

A new media platform for the AES

Tafouk TV is being developed as more than a conventional national broadcaster. Its programming is designed around the shared political and institutional framework of the AES, giving the three member states a common audiovisual platform.

The channel's schedule combines news bulletins with programmes covering current affairs, geopolitics, security and information verification. Its editorial offer is also intended to provide greater visibility to developments taking place across the three countries.

The Malian government has described the broadcaster as an instrument serving information sovereignty, cultural promotion and regional integration. Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop, during a visit to the channel's premises in Bamako on September 17, highlighted the importance attributed by the authorities to communication alongside other areas of confederal cooperation.

Broadcasting across linguistic communities

Language is another central component of the project. Tafouk TV broadcasts content in French and English while also incorporating regional languages, including Bambara, Mooré, Fulfulde and Hausa.

This multilingual approach reflects the linguistic diversity of the three countries and is intended to broaden access to the channel beyond French-speaking audiences.

The broadcaster is also developing its digital presence. Its official platform currently provides live television access alongside information content covering Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and the activities of the AES.

Part of a wider media network

Tafouk TV is not being created in isolation. It forms part of a broader effort to establish common media institutions for the three Sahelian states.

A joint radio service, Daandé Liptako, is already operating, while plans for a shared news agency have also been announced. The radio's name refers to the Liptako region and means “Voice of Liptako” in Fulfulde.

The television project itself was formalised through an agreement between the three countries in December 2025, followed by further institutional steps in 2026, including the installation of its board of directors in Bamako.

Information sovereignty becomes a regional priority

The development of these shared media platforms comes as Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger deepen their institutional cooperation within the AES.

The three countries have progressively built common structures since their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS. Their governments have repeatedly presented greater control over strategic communication and information as part of their broader approach to national and regional sovereignty.

For the AES, Tafouk TV therefore represents both a broadcasting project and an institutional communication tool. Its long-term significance will depend on its ability to establish a broad audience, produce diverse and credible journalism, and develop a sustainable regional media ecosystem.

With its headquarters in Bamako and programming directed toward audiences across the three member states, the channel marks another concrete step in the construction of shared institutions within the Sahel bloc.
