Euromed University of Fes ranks first in Morocco in UI GreenMetric 2026
Euromed University of Fes (UEMF) has been ranked first in Morocco and 323rd worldwide in the 2026 edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, highlighting the institution’s growing profile in sustainable higher education.
The international ranking evaluates universities according to their efforts to address environmental and sustainability challenges. Its assessment covers areas including infrastructure, energy use, waste and water management, transportation, education, research and institutional governance. The 2026 edition includes universities from 110 countries.
UEMF said the result reflects its efforts to combine academic development with environmental responsibility, scientific research, innovation and a broader commitment to social impact. The university has increasingly incorporated sustainability into its institutional strategy and campus development.
The latest result adds to a series of international rankings in which the Fes-based university has recorded strong performances. In the 2026 Round University Ranking, UEMF retained its position as Morocco’s highest-ranked university, following its second-place position in Africa in the previous edition.
The university also appears in the 2026 Times Higher Education rankings, where it is ranked second nationally and placed in the 401-600 global band. Other international assessment platforms have similarly highlighted aspects of its academic and research performance.
ScholarGPS places UEMF at the top nationally, while U-Multirank has recognized the institution for its performance in teaching and research. The university has also been listed among the leading institutions worldwide for student mobility, according to UEMF.
Research represents another important component of the university’s international profile. Eight UEMF researchers were included in the 2025 Stanford-Elsevier list identifying scientists among the top two percent globally according to citation-based indicators, the university said.
The combination of sustainability, research and internationalization reflects a broader transformation taking place across higher education, as universities face increasing pressure to reduce their environmental footprint while strengthening academic performance and societal impact.
UI GreenMetric was created to encourage universities to develop and measure sustainability strategies across their campuses. The ranking is designed to assess not only environmental infrastructure but also education, research and institutional action related to sustainable development.
For UEMF, the 2026 ranking provides another international benchmark for its development as a research-oriented institution. The university, established as a non-profit public-interest institution, has positioned sustainability, international cooperation and innovation as central elements of its academic model.
The latest recognition also contributes to Morocco’s visibility in international higher education rankings, particularly in areas related to sustainable development. As universities around the world expand their environmental and social initiatives, rankings such as UI GreenMetric are increasingly being used to compare institutional approaches to sustainability and campus management.
