Spain’s Mass migrant regularisation nears deadline as NGOs intensify outreach

Spain is experiencing a sharp increase in residency applications as thousands of undocumented migrants seek to complete a special regularisation process before the government's application deadline expires on Tuesday.

Non-governmental organisations across the country have intensified their outreach efforts, helping applicants gather the documentation required to qualify for a one-year residence permit. Volunteers and legal advisers are working extended hours to reach migrants who have yet to complete their files.

According to official figures, the programme has attracted approximately 1.27 million applications within just a few weeks, highlighting the significant demand for legal residency among people living and working in Spain without formal immigration status.

Many applicants, however, remain at risk of missing the opportunity because they are unable to obtain the necessary supporting documents before the deadline. Required paperwork may include proof of residence, identity documents, or evidence demonstrating vulnerability, depending on individual circumstances.

Spain's informal economy continues to employ a substantial number of undocumented workers. Estimates indicate that around 840,000 people work without legal employment status, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, construction, hospitality, and domestic services.

In the southern province of Almería, where migrant labour plays a vital role in intensive agricultural production, many workers have been travelling to other cities, including Valladolid, to obtain official certificates required to support their applications.

Humanitarian organisations argue that the regularisation programme offers an opportunity to improve labour protections, reduce exploitation, and facilitate access to healthcare, housing, and public services for migrants who have already established lives in Spain.

Despite appeals from advocacy groups for additional time, the Spanish government has given no indication that it intends to extend the application period. As a result, NGOs continue to urge eligible migrants to submit their applications before the deadline expires.

The outcome of the programme is expected to have important implications for Spain's labour market and immigration policy, while also influencing broader discussions across Europe on pathways to legal status for undocumented migrants already contributing to national economies.
