South Korea-USA: First lee-Trump summit scheduled in Washington on August 25
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung will travel to Washington for his first summit with U.S. President Donald Trump on August 25, aiming to strengthen the bilateral alliance and cooperation in advanced industries, the South Korean presidency announced Tuesday.
Lee will depart Seoul on August 24 for a three-day visit to the United States, his first since taking office in early June, said presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung, cited by Yonhap News Agency.
The leaders will discuss developing a “forward-looking comprehensive strategic alliance” in response to changing global security and economic conditions, peace and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and the reinforcement of their joint deterrence posture, Kang said during a press briefing.
Discussions will also focus on industrial cooperation in semiconductors, batteries, and shipbuilding, as well as economic partnerships in advanced technologies and strategic minerals, following the bilateral trade agreement reached earlier this month.
This summit follows an agreement between Seoul and Washington to reduce U.S. tariffs from 25% to 15% in exchange for a $350 billion investment pledge, $100 billion in U.S. energy purchases, and commitments on industrial cooperation, according to Yonhap.
Additional talks are expected to cover investment details, the future of the military alliance, and coordination of policies toward North Korea.
