Rubio cautions Israel on West Bank annexation amid Gaza ceasefire efforts

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged Israel to reconsider annexing parts of the West Bank, warning that such a move could undermine the fragile Gaza ceasefire and derail ongoing peace efforts. Speaking before his departure to Israel, Rubio emphasized that annexation “at this time … might be counterproductive,” referencing the 20-point Trump peace plan initiated earlier this month.

The Trump plan, which began with a ceasefire on October 10, includes a phased approach to stabilizing Gaza, starting with a hostage-prisoner swap. However, Rubio’s remarks highlight concerns that annexation could disrupt the implementation of the ceasefire and further complicate the path to a two-state solution, as outlined by United Nations resolutions.

Rubio’s warning comes on the heels of Israel’s Knesset passing two preliminary annexation bills concerning the occupied West Bank. The bills have yet to undergo three additional readings before becoming law. While acknowledging Israel’s democratic process, Rubio stressed that such actions could jeopardize international efforts to mediate peace.

Tensions remain high as the ceasefire faces repeated violations. Israeli forces have killed at least 88 Palestinians and injured over 300 others since the agreement took effect. Rescue teams have also recovered 436 bodies from the rubble in Gaza, where widespread destruction has left Palestinian families struggling to access essential humanitarian aid.

In addition, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has reported that over 61 million tons of rubble now cover large areas of Gaza, with entire neighborhoods reduced to ashes. The International Court of Justice has condemned the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories as illegal and called for the evacuation of settlements in both the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Rubio’s remarks signal caution as the US balances its support for Israel with broader international efforts to achieve peace in the region. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance’s visit to Israel underscores the administration’s commitment to implementing the ceasefire despite ongoing challenges.
