In a move set to transform the African aviation landscape, Morocco's flag carrier, Royal Air Maroc (RAM), has announced plans to quadruple its fleet by 2030. Currently operating with 50 aircraft, the airline aims to expand to nearly 200 planes, establishing itself as a significant player both in Africa and globally.

This ambitious growth strategy is bolstered by Morocco's thriving tourism industry and the country's role as a co-host for the 2030 World Cup. To support its expansion, RAM recently launched a tender for new aircraft, reinforcing its commitment to modernization and growth.

Morocco's tourism sector has witnessed substantial growth, with an annual influx of 14.5 million visitors. By 2026, this figure is projected to reach 17.5 million. To accommodate the expected increase in travelers, Morocco's air transport infrastructure is undergoing a major transformation. With the 2030 World Cup on the horizon, RAM aims to ensure seamless travel for millions of soccer enthusiasts visiting Morocco during the tournament.

Abdelhamid Addou, RAM's Chief Executive Officer, discussed the airline's expansion plans in a recent interview with Reuters. He confirmed that the tender for new aircraft was launched on April 15, emphasizing RAM's commitment to increasing international connectivity. This growth aligns with RAM's broader strategic plan, developed in partnership with the Moroccan government, which focuses on enhancing domestic routes, establishing point-to-point tourist connections, and strengthening Casablanca's status as a major aviation hub.

Addou highlighted the need for a diverse fleet to meet a wide range of travel requirements. The expansion will include medium-haul and short-haul aircraft, as well as long-haul jets, enabling RAM to offer more destinations and increased flexibility for passengers. This fleet diversity is crucial for the airline's continued success and its aspirations to become a leading global carrier.

The collaboration between the Moroccan government and RAM, formalized in July 2023, represents a significant milestone in the airline's expansion. With additional funding, RAM is well-positioned to accelerate its growth and turn its vision into reality. As the airline scales up, it is set to solidify its place among the industry's elite, with a fleet that is as expansive as its ambitions.
