Naval Crisis: Moroccan Patrol Vessel Stranded in Treacherous Waters Near Melilla
In a challenging maritime incident near Melilla, the Moroccan Royal Navy's patrol boat "Al-Qasid" remains stranded following a technical failure that occurred during its departure from Nador port on Thursday.
The P-32 class vessel, commissioned in 1988, encountered difficulties in a rocky maritime zone where rescue operations have been significantly hampered by strong currents and violent winds. The Royal Armed Forces (FAR) confirmed that the Coast Guard unit experienced an abrupt technical malfunction, forcing the vessel to become lodged between rocks amid harsh weather conditions.
Responding to the crisis, FAR immediately dispatched a specialized maritime unit to provide critical support and assistance to the stranded vessel, maintaining strict adherence to safety protocols. According to the Moroccan Military Forum, citing Spanish sources, the incident appears to have resulted from a collision with a rocky obstacle, causing engine damage and water infiltration into the hull. Officials report no oil or gasoline spillage has occurred.
While Spanish authorities offered intervention support to assist in towing the vessel to the second naval base, Moroccan officials declined the assistance, leading Spain to withdraw their units. The situation remains precarious, with ongoing concerns about water leakage that could potentially compromise the vessel's stability.
Maritime authorities continue their rescue efforts, expressing their commitment to overcoming the operational challenges and securing the safe recovery of the "Al-Qasid" in the days ahead. The complex operation highlights the inherent risks of maritime operations in challenging weather conditions and the importance of coordinated emergency response protocols.
The rescue operation represents a significant test of Morocco's maritime emergency response capabilities, as teams work against adverse conditions to salvage the patrol boat and ensure the safety of all resources involved.
