Morocco's Innovative Approach to Developing Young Football Talent

Morocco has emerged as a powerhouse in the world of football, and their approach to nurturing young talent has caught the attention of global governing body FIFA. The Mohammed VI Football Academy, a sprawling 30-hectare facility approved by FIFA, has been at the forefront of Morocco's football development initiative. Opened in 2019, the academy brings together more than 50 development specialists and technical advisors, all focused on identifying and honing the skills of talented young players.

"The development of football in Morocco is based on a triangular approach that must form the basis of the development of any system: facilities, talent and qualified personnel," explained Fouzi Lekjaa, the President of the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). This holistic approach, which encompasses top-notch infrastructure, a robust talent identification program, and a highly trained coaching staff, has been the driving force behind Morocco's success.

The regional plan implemented by the FRMF is a key component of this strategy. The country is divided into 12 regions, each with its own academy that mirrors the national-level Mohammed VI facility. This decentralized system allows for a wider net to be cast in the search for promising young footballers, who are then channeled through the regional academies and into the national center of excellence.

"We have a team that oversees development in the 12 regions of the country, starting with talent spotting, with young players attending club academies," Lekjaa elaborated. "The regional academies are the same as the national academy, only smaller. The best players from the regions come to the centre of excellence, which has a coaching and medical staff that works with outstanding young players at grassroots level and takes them to the next level."

The FRMF has also made a concerted effort to collaborate with the Ministry of National Education, creating school structures across the country that accommodate children who prioritize football alongside their academic studies. This comprehensive approach ensures that aspiring footballers receive a well-rounded education while honing their skills on the pitch.

FIFA's Technical Director, Steven Martens, praised the FRMF's vision and programs, stating, "The FRMF is very important for FIFA and football in Africa, not only because of its facilities but also because of its programmes, the vision of the president and the quality of its training."

The impact of Morocco's football development model is undeniable. The country's national teams, both men's and women's, have achieved remarkable success on the global stage, with five World Cup appearances for the men's team and a bronze medal for the women's under-20 squad at the 2019 African Games.
