Morocco Braces for Intense Thunderstorms: Red Alert Issued Across Multiple Provinces
Morocco's General Directorate of Meteorology has issued a red weather alert, warning of "very heavy" thunderstorms set to impact several provinces across the country. The severe weather event, expected to begin today and continue through Sunday, promises to bring significant rainfall and potential hazards to various regions.
According to the meteorological report, the provinces of Zagora, Tinghir, Errachidia, Ouarzazate, and Tatta are forecast to experience the most intense downpours, with precipitation levels ranging from 70 to 120 millimeters. These areas are under the highest level of weather warning, indicating a potential for dangerous conditions.
The alert extends to other regions as well, albeit with slightly less severe predictions. Assa Zag, Taroudant, Midelt, and Es-Semara are expected to receive between 30 to 70 millimeters of rainfall. Additionally, the provinces of Figuig, Azilal, Chtouka-Ait Baha, Tiznit, Guelmim, Sidi Ifni, and Al Haouz are also included in the weather advisory, though specific rainfall amounts for these areas were not provided.
Residents and visitors in the affected areas should be prepared for more than just rain. The weather office has cautioned that these thunderstorms may be accompanied by hail and strong winds, further increasing the potential for hazardous conditions.
This severe weather event comes on the heels of an already wet week for many of these regions. Social media platforms have been abuzz with videos showcasing the intensity of recent rainfall across various provinces.
While September typically marks the transition into Morocco's autumn season, bringing cooler temperatures and increased rainfall compared to the summer months, the intensity of these predicted storms is noteworthy. It's worth mentioning that some areas, including the Rabat region, have recently experienced unseasonably warm temperatures, with highs reaching 27 degrees Celsius.
Despite the potential risks associated with such severe weather, there is a silver lining. Morocco has been grappling with drought conditions in recent years, and this early rainfall could prove beneficial for the country's water reserves. Last year's late rains helped mitigate some of the water scarcity issues, but the government has acknowledged ongoing challenges and has implemented urgent plans to address water shortages.
As the storms approach, authorities are likely to issue further guidance. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed about local weather updates, take necessary precautions, and follow any safety instructions provided by emergency services.
