Morocco's Coal Imports Surge: A Shift in African Energy Dynamics

In a significant development for African energy markets, Morocco has emerged as the continent's leading importer of U.S. thermal coal during the first half of 2024. The North African nation's purchases have skyrocketed to 2.8 million tonnes, marking a remarkable 100% increase from the previous year's figures.

This dramatic rise in coal imports was revealed in a recent report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), published on September 4. The data shows that Morocco has overtaken Egypt, which imported 2.4 million tonnes, to claim the top spot among African buyers of U.S. thermal coal.

The magnitude of Morocco's and Egypt's combined imports is striking, accounting for 98% of all U.S. thermal coal shipments to Africa during this period. Total U.S. exports to the continent reached an unprecedented 5.3 million tonnes, representing a 60% year-on-year increase and the highest volume since 2000.

Experts attribute Morocco's increased demand for coal to its burgeoning industrial sector, particularly energy-intensive industries such as cement production. The EIA noted, "A major reason for increased exports of U.S. thermal coal into North Africa has been strong demand by industry, mostly from cement plants and brickmakers." The agency highlighted that these industries value the high heat content of U.S. thermal coal, which enhances manufacturing efficiency.
