Spanish Defense Minister Highlights Morocco’s Crucial Role in Migration Control Amid Broader European Challenges

In a recent statement, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles emphasized the “complete and unwavering” collaboration between Spain and Morocco in tackling migration issues. Speaking on Thursday, Robles responded to criticisms from the People's Party regarding the government’s immigration policies, asserting that Morocco’s cooperation is integral and comprehensive.

Robles, who frequently visits the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, noted that during a recent visit to Melilla in mid-August, she was assured by military officials of Morocco’s full support in combating migration. She reaffirmed this stance, stating, “I was there two weeks ago, and Morocco’s cooperation in managing migration at this time is indeed complete and unwavering.”

The Defense Minister further elaborated that migration is a challenge not only for Spain but also for Europe as a whole. She highlighted the situation in Mali, where the last contingent of the EU mission, which included Spanish troops, has withdrawn, describing the situation as “alarming.” The rise of jihadist extremism in countries like Burkina Faso and Niger, she warned, underscores the urgency of the issue.

Robles criticized Europe’s apparent indifference to the situation, pointing out that there have been 400 deaths this week alone due to a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso. She stressed that as long as Europe fails to prioritize the Sahel region and invest in aiding these nations, the crisis will persist.

“Currently, the living conditions in these countries are unacceptable,” Robles remarked. She emphasized that the Atlantic Ocean represents a critical escape route for residents of these troubled regions. For these reasons, Spain is adamant about the need for concern and active collaboration with Sahel countries to address the ongoing crisis effectively.
