Morocco surpasses 41 million internet subscriptions as 5G adoption accelerates

Morocco's telecommunications sector continued its strong momentum during the first quarter of 2026, driven by rapid growth in internet services and the expanding adoption of fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology. The latest figures highlight the country's ongoing digital transformation and growing demand for high-speed connectivity across businesses and households.

According to the latest quarterly report from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT), the number of 5G subscribers exceeded 3.22 million by the end of March 2026. The rapid adoption follows the commercial launch of 5G services in late 2025 and the deployment of approximately 8,400 network sites across different regions of the country, significantly improving nationwide coverage.

The telecommunications industry also recorded steady financial growth during the period, reflecting sustained demand for digital communication services and mobile data. Continued investments in network infrastructure have supported higher service quality while expanding access to next-generation technologies.

Morocco's mobile market remained highly dynamic, with total mobile subscriptions rising to 57.06 million, resulting in a mobile penetration rate of nearly 155% of the population. Despite this expansion, traditional voice communications continued their long-term decline as consumers increasingly rely on internet-based messaging and calling platforms. Outgoing voice traffic and SMS usage both recorded noticeable decreases compared with the same period last year.

Internet services remained the fastest-growing segment of the telecommunications market. Total internet subscriptions surpassed 41 million, pushing internet penetration to approximately 111.5% and adding more than 1.2 million new subscriptions over the past year. The figures underline the growing importance of digital connectivity for both personal and professional use.

Although 5G is expanding rapidly, 4G technology continues to serve as the backbone of Morocco's mobile internet market. More than 33 million users remain connected through 4G networks, accounting for the majority of the country's 38.1 million mobile internet subscribers. The technology continues to experience steady growth while supporting the gradual transition toward wider 5G adoption.

The report also highlighted increasing competition among telecommunications operators. Mobile and fixed-number portability continued to gain popularity, allowing more customers to switch providers while keeping their existing phone numbers. This trend reflects a more competitive marketplace and greater consumer flexibility.

Morocco also recorded continued progress in its digital economy, with more than 10,300 new internet domain names registered during the first quarter of 2026. The increase points to expanding online business activity, the launch of new digital platforms, and broader adoption of digital services across the country.

Industry analysts believe these results demonstrate Morocco's commitment to strengthening its digital infrastructure and supporting long-term technological development. As investments in broadband networks and 5G deployment continue, the country is expected to further enhance digital inclusion, improve connectivity, and reinforce its position as one of Africa's rapidly evolving digital markets.
