Morocco Sets Ambitious 20% Energy Savings Target While Expanding Renewable Power

Morocco is charting a bold course in energy efficiency, aiming to achieve 20% energy savings by 2030 while simultaneously pushing toward generating 52% of its power from renewable sources, according to Energy Minister Leila Benali.

The efficiency strategy integrates several key objectives from the country's sustainable development framework and new development model. Minister Benali emphasized that new investment projects must adhere to energy efficiency principles, with these measures being incorporated into public spending and state-supported programs.

"Energy efficiency serves as a second pillar of Morocco's national energy strategy," Benali stated, highlighting its potential for job creation. The initiative is expected to generate approximately 100,000 employment opportunities by 2030. Already, the country has recorded energy savings of 6.58% in 2020.

Concrete steps are being taken to realize these goals. The Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency is currently updating its metrics, while reforms in public lighting are projected to cut energy consumption by 40%. A notable government initiative rewarding citizens and stakeholders for reducing electricity usage has already achieved a 3% decrease in consumption.

The country's renewable energy portfolio continues to expand, with the Noor Ouarzazate Complex standing as a prime example. This facility, one of the world's largest concentrated solar power plants, generates approximately 580 MW of clean energy.

Recent developments underscore Morocco's commitment to this transition. During the current government's tenure, over 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy projects have received approval. These initiatives represent investments exceeding MAD 19 billion ($1.8 billion) and have created more than 300 direct jobs, along with thousands of indirect employment opportunities.

The country's comprehensive approach to energy transformation combines efficiency measures with renewable energy development, positioning Morocco to meet its ambitious 2030 targets while fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability.
