Morocco secures $800 million investment for polysilicon plant in Tan-Tan

Morocco has signed a landmark investment agreement to establish a polysilicon production plant in Tan-Tan, marking the first major industrial project of its kind in the region. With an investment of MAD 8 billion (approximately $800 million), the plant is set to boost local development and position Morocco as a leader in renewable energy.

Strategic investment for renewable energy

The polysilicon plant will have an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons, with 85% destined for export to international markets. Expected to create 1,500 direct jobs and over 2,000 indirect jobs, the project underscores Morocco’s commitment to industrializing its southern regions and contributing to the global energy transition.

The agreement was signed by Karim Zidan, Morocco’s Delegate Minister for Investment and Policy Evaluation, and Philip Jenkins, CEO of the American company GPM Holding. Recognized as a strategic initiative by Morocco’s National Investment Committee in February 2024, the project aligns with the country’s renewable energy strategy, particularly in developing industrial value chains for solar panel components.

Regional development and cooperation

A cooperation protocol was also signed between the Ministry, the region of Guelmim-Oued Noun, the Tan-Tan province, and GPM Holding. This protocol aims to enhance local economic integration, foster a regional industrial ecosystem, and train young talent in collaboration with educational and technical institutions.

The initiative reflects King Mohammed VI’s directives to promote productive investment, reduce regional disparities, and create sustainable job opportunities. It also aligns with Morocco’s broader strategy to strengthen economic activity and industrial growth in its southern provinces.

A milestone for Tan-Tan

This industrial venture is the first of its scale in Tan-Tan and represents a significant step in Morocco’s efforts to invest in the southern regions. By prioritizing projects of this magnitude, the government continues to champion local development, job creation, and the economic empowerment of the southern provinces.
