Morocco strengthens green future with aligned energy and transport strategies

Two key ministers gathered in Rabat to enhance Morocco’s commitment to sustainability, focusing on integrating clean energy into the nation’s transport systems.

Ministers unite for a low-carbon agenda

Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition, and Abdessamad Kayouh, Minister of Transport and Logistics, held a high-level coordination meeting to harmonize their departments’ efforts in advancing Morocco’s energy transition and transport reform. This collaboration aims to build a low-carbon future without compromising economic growth or efficiency.

The discussion centered on introducing renewable energy sources, such as green hydrogen and other derivatives, into the country’s transport infrastructure across land, sea, and air. Both ministries emphasized the importance of a seamless integration of cleaner energy technologies to reduce carbon emissions while ensuring robust growth.

New opportunities for green investment

Beyond energy and transport, the meeting explored Morocco’s industrial potential in renewable energy value chains, including solar, wind, batteries, and cables. Both ministers see these industries as pivotal for attracting green investments and achieving industrial independence, positioning Morocco as a leader in the regional green economy.

Building a sustainable transport network

Practical solutions for low-carbon mobility were a focal point. The ministers called for innovative approaches and strengthened coordination to tackle challenges related to the energy transition and transport reform. They acknowledged the need to modernize infrastructure in a way that aligns with Morocco’s broader sustainability agenda.

A broader national push

This meeting aligns with Morocco’s overarching strategy to unify energy and transport policies. Recent initiatives include a $350 million World Bank-backed project to transform Casablanca’s transport and logistics network and a $1.1 billion national program to overhaul urban bus systems across 84 cities by 2029.

Minister Benali highlighted Morocco’s progress in renewable energy, noting that two decades of investment in energy infrastructure have enabled the country to produce cost-competitive electricity from solar and wind. These developments, coupled with its strategic focus on energy and transport, reinforce Morocco’s ambition to become a regional hub for renewable energy and sustainable industrialization.

By combining efforts, the Ministry of Energy Transition and the Ministry of Transport aim to cement Morocco’s position as a credible force in the regional green economy, ensuring sustainability and industrial growth go hand in hand.
