South Korean football association investigated over World Cup coach appointment

South Korean authorities have launched an investigation into the Korea Football Association (KFA) as part of a probe into the appointment of the national team's former head coach following the country's disappointing performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Investigators carried out search operations at the football association's headquarters as they examined allegations related to the recruitment process. The inquiry is focused on whether internal procedures and governance rules were properly followed during the selection of the former national team coach.

The investigation comes after South Korea's early exit from the World Cup, where the team failed to advance beyond the group stage despite entering the tournament with high expectations. The squad featured several internationally recognized players competing for leading European clubs, raising hopes of a strong campaign.

The disappointing results have intensified public scrutiny of the country's football leadership, with supporters and analysts questioning both tactical decisions and the management of the national team. The coach accepted responsibility for the team's performance after stepping down from the position.

Authorities are also examining claims that senior football officials may have influenced the appointment process in ways that did not fully comply with the association's internal regulations. The football association has not provided detailed public comments while the investigation remains ongoing.

The case has sparked wider debate about transparency, accountability, and governance within South Korean football. Experts argue that strong institutional oversight and merit-based decision-making are essential for maintaining public confidence and supporting the long-term development of the national game.

As the investigation continues, football supporters will be watching closely for its conclusions and any potential reforms aimed at strengthening governance within the Korea Football Association ahead of future international competitions.
