Houthi drone and missile attacks kill dozens of Yemeni government soldiers
A series of coordinated drone and missile attacks attributed to Yemen's Houthi movement has left at least 38 government soldiers dead, marking one of the deadliest incidents since the country's fragile truce began to unravel.
The strikes underscore the renewed intensity of Yemen's long-running conflict and raise fresh concerns about regional security as hostilities continue to escalate.
Military positions targeted in multiple provinces
According to military and medical sources, the attacks struck government-controlled military sites in Marib Province, a strategic region in central Yemen, as well as additional positions in Hadramout Province, near the border with Saudi Arabia.
The coordinated nature of the operation suggests a significant escalation in the Houthis' military campaign, with drones and missiles reportedly used against multiple government installations.
Deadliest attack in years
The latest assault represents the highest reported death toll among Yemeni government forces since 2022, when a United Nations-backed truce significantly reduced large-scale fighting between the internationally recognized government and the Houthi movement.
Although the ceasefire helped lower overall levels of violence, negotiations have repeatedly stalled, and intermittent clashes have continued across several front lines.
Renewed concerns over regional stability
The attacks are likely to heighten concerns among regional and international stakeholders seeking a political solution to the conflict.
Marib remains one of the most strategically important areas in Yemen because of its energy resources and military significance, while Hadramout's proximity to Saudi Arabia makes developments there particularly sensitive from a regional security perspective.
Conflict remains unresolved
Despite years of diplomatic efforts, Yemen's civil war continues to produce periodic military escalations that threaten prospects for a lasting settlement.
The latest violence highlights the fragile security environment and the ongoing challenges facing peace initiatives aimed at ending one of the Middle East's longest-running conflicts. Analysts warn that renewed attacks of this scale could complicate future negotiations and increase pressure on regional actors working to stabilize the situation.
