African rights coalition launched to support peace efforts in Sudan
A new African human rights coalition has been established to strengthen civil society efforts aimed at supporting peace and stability in Sudan, where armed conflict continues to fuel one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises.
The initiative, known as the Sudan Coalition, was announced in Nairobi, Kenya, following a three-day forum that brought together human rights defenders, civil society representatives, legal experts, and international partners from across Africa. The gathering focused on developing coordinated advocacy strategies and reinforcing the role of African organizations in promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Organizers said the coalition seeks to provide a unified platform for African civil society organizations to amplify the voices of Sudanese communities, encourage dialogue, and support regional and international peace initiatives. The network also aims to strengthen cooperation on issues related to human rights, civilian protection, accountability, and humanitarian assistance.
Participants stressed the importance of creating a coordinated African approach to advocacy that can engage international institutions while highlighting the urgent humanitarian needs of millions of people affected by the conflict. They emphasized that lasting peace will require inclusive political dialogue, protection of civilians, and respect for international humanitarian law.
The coalition is expected to finalize its organizational framework before launching its first programs, with technical and institutional support from regional human rights organizations and partner institutions.
Sudan has faced prolonged violence that has resulted in widespread displacement, significant civilian casualties, and extensive damage to infrastructure and essential services. International organizations continue to call for an immediate ceasefire, expanded humanitarian access, and renewed diplomatic efforts to achieve a sustainable political settlement.
The launch of the Sudan Coalition reflects growing efforts by African civil society to play a more active role in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and the promotion of human rights across the continent.
