Morocco's pharmaceutical imports from the EU rise in 2024
Recent data from Eurostat reveals a significant increase in Morocco's pharmaceutical imports from the European Union in 2024, although the country’s exports to the EU remain limited. According to the statistics, Morocco imported €559 million worth of medical and pharmaceutical products from the EU in 2024, up from €482 million in the previous year. This growth highlights Morocco's increasing reliance on the European market for its pharmaceutical and healthcare needs.
On the other hand, Moroccan pharmaceutical exports to the EU saw a slight decline, reaching only €20 million in 2024 compared to €21.2 million in 2023. This disparity reinforces Morocco's limited role as a pharmaceutical supplier in Europe, despite efforts from local companies to expand into export markets.
In global terms, EU pharmaceutical exports surged by over 13% in 2024, hitting a record €313 billion. Meanwhile, imports grew more modestly by 0.5%, totaling €120 billion. The EU's pharmaceutical trade surplus reached €193.6 billion, underscoring the dominant role of the European pharmaceutical industry in global trade.
Germany led EU exports with €68 billion in sales, followed by Ireland (€56 billion) and Belgium (€41 billion). These countries are also among the top importers, along with the Netherlands.
In terms of trading partners, the United States remains the largest customer of the European pharmaceutical industry, purchasing €119 billion in products. Switzerland and the UK follow, with the US also being the main supplier of medicines to the EU, exporting nearly €46 billion to EU member countries.
