Morocco enhances security for upcoming major sporting events
In a significant move to bolster security for major sporting events, Moroccan authorities have announced enhanced measures aimed at addressing potential risks associated with the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2025 and the 2030 World Cup. During a recent conference in El Jadida, Hassan Bouzidi, the general controller and head of the sports security division at the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), outlined the country's preparedness to confront various threats.
Bouzidi emphasized that Morocco possesses comprehensive capabilities to tackle cybercrime and other potential hazards that could disrupt these prestigious events. He highlighted the nation’s extensive experience in hosting international sporting competitions, recalling successful events like the FIFA Club World Cup in 2013, 2014, and 2022, along with numerous other international sports events.
In adherence to the security standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA, Bouzidi noted that drones will play a pivotal role in surveillance efforts. He explained that drones will significantly enhance public space security, enabling precise monitoring of crowd movements, identifying potential troublemakers, and facilitating swift security responses.
Coordination among various security teams is vital to ensure the smooth operation of these events. Bouzidi pointed out that a centralized command and coordination room will serve as a critical communication hub, linking different security personnel and resources efficiently.
Additionally, the use of surveillance cameras along roadways and around stadiums will help identify suspicious activities and respond promptly to any unforeseen incidents. Illustrating the authorities' vision for crowd management, Bouzidi discussed strategies to separate the movement of different groups, including teams, journalists, and spectators with special needs, while promoting the use of public transport for the general public.
Measures will also be implemented to secure Fan Zones and control supporter movements at transport hubs, particularly airports and train stations in host cities. Bouzidi stressed the importance of coordinating these efforts with Spain and Portugal, Morocco's partners in the 2030 World Cup organization.
Mouad Hajji, the general coordinator of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), praised the significant efforts of security services in ensuring the safety of sporting events. He acknowledged that football matches attract large crowds and have become a showcase for Morocco, contributing to social development. Hajji reiterated the FRMF's commitment to maintaining stadium security, which he described as essential for the success of any football event.
The federation is working collaboratively with security services to implement international safety standards in sports, following FIFA and CAF recommendations while adopting best practices from leading countries in Africa. With the approaching CAN 2025 and World Cup 2030, ensuring the safety of stadiums has become a collective priority, requiring ongoing vigilance and mobilization from all institutions involved.
Hajji also underscored the FRMF's dedication to developing an integrated system based on international norms for organizing football events. This includes modernizing stadium security infrastructure, promoting electronic ticketing, and improving entry and exit monitoring systems.
The ongoing sixth edition of the DGSN's Open Days, running until May 21 under the theme "Proud to serve a millennial nation and a glorious throne," coincides with the 69th anniversary of the DGSN. This initiative aims to inform the public about the missions undertaken by various security units to ensure citizen safety and maintain public order, while showcasing advanced technologies and resources at their disposal.
