Moroccan ‘Mickey Mat’ Wins Best Screenplay Award at Valencia Screenwriters Fest
In the world of cinema, where every script battles for a chance to shine, Moroccan talents El Mahdi L Youni and Yasmine Bennani have found success with their latest work.
Moroccan cinema stole the spotlight at the 27th edition of the Valencia International Screenwriters and Composers Festival, which took place from June 3 to 7, 2024.
The short film “Mickey Mat,” crafted by Moroccan director El Mahdi L. Youbi and penned by the French-Moroccan screenwriter Yasmine Bennani, has clinched the Best Screenplay award.
This win isn’t just a nod to their talent but a jubilant shout-out to Moroccan creativity on the international stage.
The short film dives into the life of Khalil, a 27-year-old from a working-class neighborhood, who takes on the role of Mickey Mouse to liven up a character Kamil’s birthday party. But, things don't quite go according to plan.
This delightful narrative has earned these Moroccan talents the coveted “Crystal Pen Award for Best Short Film” Screenplay, presented by the Innovation Jury, chaired by Marguerite Abouet.
The Spanish festival’s lineup showcased eight dynamic categories, including feature films, short films, series, animation, podcasts, innovative writing, and music composition.
Out of numerous submissions, around forty works in progress were selected following a call for projects.
Competitors will have the opportunity to collaborate with industry professionals through author forums and workshops, fostering a vibrant environment for creative exchange and growth.
