Moroccan Nurses Escalate Nationwide Strike Amidst Unresolved Grievances

In a significant escalation of the ongoing labor dispute within Morocco's healthcare sector, the Independent National Nurses' Union (INNU) has declared a 72-hour nationwide strike, scheduled to begin on March 26th and conclude on March 28th. This move reflects the union's intensified efforts to highlight longstanding grievances, encompassing issues such as poor working conditions, suppression of protests, and unilateral policymaking by government authorities.

The tension between the INNU and the Moroccan government has been mounting for months, with the union accusing officials of ignoring their demands and employing evasive tactics. In a strongly-worded statement released on Saturday, the INNU expressed profound frustration over the "lack of response from government officials regarding pending issues within the healthcare sector."

At the core of the union's discontent are numerous concerns, with the mistreatment of nursing activists during recent demonstrations being a primary issue. "We condemn the suppression of our march towards the Ministry on February 24, 2024, and the mistreatment of our activists on March 6, 2024, in front of the Ministry," the statement declared, highlighting the escalating tensions between the two sides.

Additionally, the INNU strongly opposes the government's recent decision to transfer healthcare institutions to the private sector under the guise of "innovative financing," viewing it as a threat to the principles of public service. The union also takes issue with Ministerial Decision No. 2808.23, which affects the classification of medical professions, demanding that the Minister of Health rescind the decision and involve nursing and health technicians in the decision-making process.

"We reaffirm our commitment to all the achievements of public service, including job security and centralized wages, and reject any attempt to burden nursing staff with the government's shortcomings," the INNU maintained, underscoring their unwavering stance on preserving the rights and benefits of healthcare workers.

While emergency services will remain operational during the impending strike, the INNU has pledged to escalate its protests beyond the 72-hour nationwide walkout. Plans are underway to organize regional marches, sit-ins, and interactive seminars, with nursing staff encouraged to continue wearing black armbands as a symbolic display of discontent.

As the standoff between the union and the government deepens, Morocco's healthcare sector finds itself engulfed in an increasingly turbulent labor dispute. With both sides seemingly entrenched in their positions, the resolution of this conflict appears to hinge on the government's willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue and address the long-standing grievances of the country's nursing workforce.
