Jr builds giant inflatable cave above pont neuf paris

JR has begun constructing a large-scale inflatable installation above Pont Neuf in Paris. The project transforms the historic bridge into a temporary immersive structure designed to resemble a vast artificial cave. It forms part of a public art intervention scheduled to open on 6 June and remain accessible until 28 June.

The installation marks four decades since Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped Pont Neuf in fabric in 1985. JR developed the project in collaboration with the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation. Instead of covering the bridge, the new work builds a surrounding pneumatic structure. Its outer surface is printed to resemble a rocky cliff, creating a visual illusion of a geological formation in the heart of the city.

The structure stretches 120 meters in length and rises up to 18 meters in height. It uses around 18,900 square meters of fabric and approximately 20,000 cubic meters of air. Continuous ventilation systems maintain its shape. Around 800 people have contributed to engineering, production, and visitor coordination. The bridge will be closed to traffic during the installation period.

Inside, visitors will walk or cycle through a fully enclosed tunnel-like space. The environment will be completely dark, designed as a sensory experience described by the artist as a symbolic passage. Sound design developed with Thomas Bangalter, formerly of Daft Punk, accompanies the installation. Augmented reality features allow visitors to use smartphones to reveal hidden visual layers.

The installation will remain open around the clock and can also be viewed from the Seine riverbanks, nearby bridges, and river boats. It coincides with major cultural events in Paris, including Fashion Week and the Fête de la Musique. Work on the structure began in mid-May.
