Red Cross mourns death of three volunteers during Ebola outbreak in Congo
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has paid tribute to three humanitarian volunteers who lost their lives after reportedly contracting Ebola during relief operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The volunteers were among the first known victims of the latest Ebola outbreak affecting the northeastern region of the country. According to humanitarian officials, the three individuals became infected while participating in body management activities during a mission carried out before the outbreak had officially been identified.
The victims, identified as Ajiko Chandiru Viviane, Sezabo Katanabo, and Alikana Udumusi Augustin, were active volunteers in the Mongbwalu branch located in Ituri province. They died earlier this month after developing symptoms linked to the highly contagious virus.
The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a rare variant for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment. The World Health Organization recently classified the outbreak as an international public health emergency due to growing concerns about its spread.
Health experts warn that Ebola remains one of the world’s most dangerous infectious diseases because it spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. Handling the bodies of victims without adequate protective equipment significantly increases the risk of transmission, especially during traditional funeral practices.
In response to the crisis, local authorities in affected regions have introduced stricter public health measures, including limitations on funeral gatherings and awareness campaigns to encourage safe burial procedures. Humanitarian teams and medical workers continue to operate on the ground despite difficult and dangerous conditions.
The Red Cross emphasized the courage and dedication of its volunteers, describing them as individuals committed to protecting vulnerable communities even in the face of extreme health risks. International organizations are now intensifying efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of life in the region.
