Ancient Laos burial jars reveal centuries of communal funeral rituals

Archaeologists working in northern Laos have uncovered the remains of at least 37 people inside a single massive stone jar, providing the first direct physical evidence that the country’s mysterious megalithic jars served as communal burial sites over multiple generations. The findings, published in the journal Antiquity on May 18, offer new insight into one of Southeast Asia’s longest-standing archaeological mysteries.

The discovery was made at Site 75 on the Plain of Jars in Xieng Khouang province, near the remote town of Phonsavan. The area contains thousands of giant stone jars scattered across highland landscapes. Some weigh several tons and have puzzled researchers since French archaeologist Madeleine Colani first documented them in the 1930s. Scholars had long suspected the jars were linked to burial practices, but no conclusive evidence had previously confirmed the theory.

The newly examined vessel, identified as Jar 1, measures more than two meters in diameter. Researchers recovered right femurs and skull fragments from 19 individuals inside the container, along with teeth belonging to at least 37 people, including adults and a child estimated to have been around 18 months old. Radiocarbon dating conducted on bone and tooth samples showed the remains were deposited over roughly 270 years, between about 890 and 1160 CE.

The skeletal remains were disarticulated, meaning the bodies had already decomposed before the bones were placed in the jar. Researchers believe the dead were first placed in smaller nearby containers where soft tissue decomposed naturally before cleaned bones were transferred into the larger communal jar. Lead researcher Louise Skopal said the large number of individuals suggests the jars may have belonged to extended family groups that returned repeatedly to perform ancestral rites across generations.

The findings also support the idea that thousands of similar jars spread across northern Laos formed part of a large-scale ancient funerary network tied to ancestor worship traditions. Some jars contained ash and burned bone fragments linked to later cremation practices associated with Buddhism, suggesting the sites may have continued to be reused after the religion spread through the region. DNA analysis is now underway to determine whether the buried individuals shared family relationships.
