Meta to test AI-assisted job interviews for software engineers

Meta to test AI-assisted job interviews for software engineers

Meta is experimenting with a new recruitment strategy by testing coding interviews that allow candidates to use artificial intelligence tools during evaluations. This initiative, currently being trialed internally, aims to better reflect real working environments where AI is frequently used—especially by software engineers.

According to internal documents reviewed by 404 Media, Meta is inviting selected employees to participate in simulated interviews to help refine the process. “This more accurately reflects the environment our engineers work in every day,” reads an internal memo.

The move is also intended to reduce bias caused by the covert use of language models (LLMs), which can distort the assessment of real skills during traditional interviews.

Meta’s long-term vision, as expressed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, includes having AI generate a significant portion of the company’s code in the near future—performing tasks comparable to those of mid-level engineers. The goal is to delegate repetitive tasks to AI so that human engineers can focus on more creative challenges.

Meta is not alone in embracing generative AI. Microsoft and Google report that about a third of their code is now produced using AI tools. In contrast, companies like Anthropic prohibit the use of AI during interviews, arguing that human value should remain central to candidate evaluation.

While AI speeds up code production, Meta emphasizes that the quality of output depends on the clarity of instructions. The company wants to ensure that candidates not only know how to use these tools effectively but can also validate and correct AI-generated code.

A Meta spokesperson stated, “It’s natural to bring these tools into the interview process since they’ve become an integral part of engineers’ daily workflows.”
